FULL INCLUSION, not crumbs

I am Pastor Marvel Souza of the Methodist Church Included By Grace – A Reconciling Church in Brazil (Methodist Church IPEG). My ministerial life began 23 years ago, when I was inspired by the Holy Spirit to start my teachings in a Brazilian Methodist church where I developed my first works based on my then recently acquired theology background.

After I served as a layman for five years, I was consecrated to deacon, having served for six years with dedication, dynamism and responsibility. At that time, I introduced a course to prepare seminarians which was more successful than I expected. It was offered in a number of churches. Furthermore, I was the leader of a small congregation in a rural farming area around the Brazilian capital for one year and a half. I became an Elder in this church and was later promoted to Pastor.

Meanwhile, I was teaching theology at a Theological Seminary and leading a congregation when I fell in love with a friend who I had met when he was a musician/soloist in a large Pentecostal Conference. (To fall in love with someone is not a problem as long as that person is of the opposite gender. But it wasn’t the case – I fell deeply in love with another man). We married and celebrated our 11^th anniversary last January.

When we met, we had a number of challenges to face – he sang in his Pentecostal Church and I was Pastor and Theology Teacher. However, we understand that full inclusion needs visage, courage, presence, spirituality and bravery! We were firmly resolved to come out of the closet!

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU NEED TO DECIDE BETWEEN WHAT YOU LIKE AND WHAT YOU LOVE?  

We decided for love!

We were rejected, persecuted and threatened, but we got together to resist and overcame all that challenges. In 2013, something happened that completely changed our lives. I signed a contract with the Brazilian Biblical Society to be the first openly gay Pastor to write commentaries for a Portuguese Bible Version. This work brings comments related with the Ecclesiastic Full Inclusion of all LGBTQIA+ people through the perspective of the Message of Grace. The reaction to this work in social media and the press resulted from the fact that the Brazilian Biblical Society supported the publication by allowing me to use one of their copyrighted versions of Biblical texts (VARC). This bible was called by the sensationalist press as the “Gay Bible”, but the true name is Commented Bible Grace upon Grace.

Amid so many controversies and persecutions due the Bible Project, but still leading a church, a friend of mine told me about the Reconciling Ministries Network in 2015. In 2016 I got in contact with the Doctor Reverend Israel Alvaran to be listed as the first Reconciling Methodist Church in Brazil. As we were listed as Reconciling Church the number of LGBTQ members increased and recently we opened three more congregations in Brazil and one in Córdoba Argentina.

The Methodist Church IPEG has been making efforts to reach the needs of everyone, offering public worship services to all in the Christian community, regardless of gender, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, social status or language.  We also provide pastoral care and follow-up, assistance to the homeless, offer language courses (English, Japanese, Portuguese) and on-line Theology courses.  We perform same-sex wedding ceremonies (since 2018 we performed 11 wedding ceremonies), provide psychological support and promote events related to the struggle for full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ worshipers. In one such event, we hosted Reverend Israel (Izzy) Alvaran from the Reconciling Ministries Network as a presenter at the Methodist  Church IPEG's November 2018 Conference.  Izzy remained with us for 10 days, preaching the Gospel of Love, Grace and Reconciliation.

Recently, we held our Second Reconciling Conference based on the theme “IF INCLUSION IS NOT UNCONDITIONAL, THERE IS NO INCLUSION”. It was three days of communion, worship, group discussion, preaching and a lot of fun.

As an Affirmative Church we are determined not to accept crumbs nor to be marginalized. We affirm that we are no longer slaves of fear, we are all child of God.   

Pentecostalismo e Neopentecostalismo Inclusivos?

"se NÃO for INCLUSÃO ECLESIAL PLENA, NÃO é INCLUSÃO!"

"Chego a achar engraçado quando vejo muitos cristãos inclusivos pentecostais e neo-pentecostais preocupados se sexo antes do casamento é pecado, se bebida alcoólica é proibida, se a transexualidade, bissexualidade ou intersexualidade é de Deus.

De fato, eu não consigo ver elementos de Inclusão Eclesial Plena no pentecostalismo e nem no neopentecostalismo. Ser aceito como membro de uma Igreja não significa dizer que esta Igreja é Inclusiva, se os elementos que compõem o fazer cristão ainda são os mesmos elementos opressores de antes, a pessoa só mudou de placa de Igreja, e passou a congregar com mais pessoas iguais a ela, e a ter um pastor/a gay , mas na prática é a mesma coisa.

Pentecostais preocupados com o que eles chamam de santidade (roupas, dons espirituais, jejuns, oração, espiritualização de tudo, pregações frenéticas, algumas até agressivas, uma luta contra imagens, falam mal dos católicos, espíritas, umbandistas e candomblé, vivem uma guerra espiritual caçando poquemons pelas ruas, pastores sem formação teológica, sem experiência de pastoreio, etc). Ademais, 90% das pregações nestas Igrejas são baseadas em textos do Antigo Testamento, e são tantas campanhas - uma mais sem fundamento que a outra.

Os Neo-pentecostais, por sua vez, se preocupam com tudo que os pentecostais se preocupam, vivem uma guerra contra as religiões afro e contra o catolicismo, focam mais na guerra espiritual e comercializam a fé das pessoas - igrejas viram grandes empresas, e as pregações, em sua maioria são baseadas no Antigo Testamento ou viram aulas de coaching.

Os instrumentos de opressão são os mesmos: "Vai para o banco!", "Cuidado porque a Ceia do Senhor ensinada na Bíblia, aqui é a SANTA CEIA", "Segura tua onda pra casar virgem - não pode ter mancha no seu véu", "Transexualidade e Bissexualidade precisam ser estudadas -  é estranho...", "Eis que te digo...", "Deus me revelou", "Somos a geração do arrebatamento", etc...

Enquanto Pastor, com Ministério em liderança de Igrejas há 23 anos e teólogo, fico estarrecido com as dúvidas elementares dos cristãos que se dizem inclusivos no Brasil. Eu acredito numa Nova Expressão de Fé em que oferecemos não Direito à Fé, mas o Exercício Pleno da Fé. Direito à Fé nós já temos, o que precisamos é Exercê-la Plenamente, e para isso os líderes não podem se comportar como administradores da fé alheia fundamentados em segmentos cristãos que por si só são excludentes, intolerantes e de fundamentação teológica duvidosa. 

Os líderes devem ser facilitadores do exercício pleno da fé, criando um ambiente harmonioso e pacífico de convivência com as diferenças, destacando que Deus é AMOR e Trinitariamente DIVERSO".

IGREJA METODISTA ABERTA AO PÚBLICO LGBTQIA+ PROMOVE CONFERÊNCIA DE LÍDERES QUEERS

Igreja Metodista aberta ao público LGBTQIA+ promove Conferência de Capacitação de Líderes Queers em Teologia Queer. Foram três dias com preleções e rodas de leituras dialogadas. Ademais, no evento, alguns líderes que concluíram curso de capacitação teológica foram ordenados ao exercício ministerial e outros foram comissionados ao curso de Capacitação Teológica. 

A Igreja Metodista Incluídos pela Graça (Igreja Metodista IPEG) tem fomentado assuntos sobre Inclusão Eclesial Plena de todos LGBTQIA+ ao exercício da fé cristã. Um dos diferenciais nesta Conferência foi a Ordenação Pastoral da primeira mulher Argentina, Noemi Teresa Farre, que passou a integrar os trabalhos metodistas de Inclusão Eclesial Plena no Brasil e América Latina. 

Outro momento especial foi o Baile de Máscaras com a temática "Qual é a sua Máscara?". No Baile, os participantes foram incentivados a refletir sobre as Máscaras que nos são impostas através do tempo. 

Para completar o evento, houve um momento de confissão pública batismal, em que quatro pessoas desceram às águas, comprometendo-se a exercer a fé dentro de um contexto de Inclusão Eclesial Plena em uma Nova Expressão de Metodismo.
